The investigation into the child protection system in Greece began in July 2018. It developed through repeated visits to various locations, including Athens, Thessaloniki, Rethymno, Kos, Leros, and Lechaina. More than forty interviews were conducted with experts, policy makers, and survivors.

The initial phase of the investigation, July to December 2018, was funded by a grant from the Investigative Journalism for the EU fund. Additional funding was provided by the Fritt Ord Foundation and the International Press Institute.
